For the more adventurist, pass the day exploring by foot, Rincon de La Vieja Volcano that rises majestically 6,284 feet out of the 34,800 acre park, home to more than 250 species of birds (including: Keel-billed Toucans and Blue-crowned Mot-mots) ocelots, sloths, jaguars, brocket deer, tapirs, coatis and of course monkeys. This remote scenic volcano is a hiker’s paradise. There are countless winding trails through a combination of a tropical and dry forest with boiling mud-pots, craters, hot sulfur springs and geysers passing lakes, streams, waterfalls and Costa Rica’s famous wildlife and flora and fauna. Points of interest include three main craters, of the volcano’s nine, Jilgueros lagoon, Las Pailas, El Volcancito and Casona Santa Maria.
Departure Time: 7:00 Am (Recommended)
Return Time: Approximately 5 hours later
Travel Time: Approximately 1 Hour, 30 minutes each way (from Playa Hermosa or Playa Del Coco)

It is nice one on the Rincon de la Vieja national park. This area of Costa Rica is known as Guanacaste and is basically the ¨wild west¨of the country. A lot of caballeros, rodeos (we just missed one) and cowboy hats. Rincon de la Vieja was a lesson in contrasts. We had hoped to hike the volcano in the park but, as often happens, the peak was in the clouds and buffeted by very high winds.
