Avispa's Santa Rosa Adventure

This is a wonderful adventure that combines Costa Rican’s rich history with its world famous natural beauty. In addition to having beautiful beaches, nature trails, plentiful wildlife, and four species of nesting sea turtles, Santa Rosa National Park protects the largest remaining tropical dry forest in Central America and happens to be Costa Rica’s most important historic site.  It has been the setting of three major battles.  The most important was in 1856 when President Juanito Mora called on the citizens of Costa Rica, to unite their forces and come together to defend their liberty and Costa Rica’s independence against William Walter and his troops.  It was a success, and as a result the government declared the Hacienda Santa Rosa, La Casona, a national monument.  La Casona, made of adobe and timber, was still intact until 2001 when it was destroyed by arson.  In 2002 it was rebuilt and is once again open to the public as part of this historical museum.  Rusted armored vehicles, in remembrance of Nicaraguans invasion in 1955, sit amongst the easily spotted wildlife and flora and fauna.  In 1986 it was revealed that Hacienda Murcielago, previously expropriated from Nicaraguan Dictator Somoza, was the site for Oliver North’s secret airstrip that was built by the CIA and was in fact used to smuggle goods and arms to the Nicaraguan Contras.  Santa Rosa National Park is home to Playa Nancite, famous for the large number of nesting Olive Ridgely turtles, and Playa Naranjo, with world renowned surfing.
